One Thread, One Seed at a Time

Weaving
There has been progress in the loom adding blocks of zinnia colors. The color I’m working on is fuscia. It’s a delicious color for the eyes in the winter.
The textile’s pattern is mixed with three different greens. For the warp, I’m using a light green tweed yarn that adds dimension. The “floating” flecks of color makes it more tactile. It’s a favorite detail. The other two greens are part of the weft to create the gridded pattern. Pictured below is the weft green called ivy. It goes brilliantly from light to dark.

Growing Inside
It’s hard to envision growing things in the winter, but this is to confirm that it’s possible. The key to growing in the winter is a sunny window.
I pulled two basil plants from the edible garden at the end of the summer and planted them in small terracota pots that fit the windowsill. We have a shallow windowsill. We make the best use of it by adding small plants in the winter.
The edible garden is located outside this window. This side of the house was completely ignored before we moved. My plan is to move the plants back to the raised beds outside once the weather gets warm. Meanwhile, a bit of fresh basil, microgreens, and scallions make everything more flavorful and special. Scallions only need a small amount of water to grow.

Growing Outside
I took the opportunity to spread native seeds that I collected from our garden. Pictured below is False Indigo. Native seeds need cold stratification to germinate. I’ve learned to appreciate rainy and snow days because they are the blank page to plan how the next garden season is going to look. Rain and snow are the best water for seeds.

Reading
I’m reading the book, Lenore Tawney: Mirror of the Universe. Her work is superb. At the moment, I’m interested in the her Clouds because I’m weaving another series of textiles related to clouds and sky studies. Her work is a continuous reminder that it’s important to understand technique, but it’s greater to take that knowledge and make something completely unique.

Wishing all a weekend of creativity and spreading the good of humanity - kindness and grace.
